A Wizards of the Coastcompany responsible for franchises Magic: The Gathering e Dungeons & Dragonsannounced the end of translation into Brazilian Portuguese of content and products of both brands. The official statement was released last Friday (23).

In the case of Dungeons & Dragons, which is one of the most popular RPG systems in the world, the decision takes place five years after the company officially arrived on national territory. The publication took place from Galápagos Games in an alliance with Gale Force Nine.

Wizards of the Coast, which belongs to the giant Hasbro, justified the measure because of low sales compared to increased production costs of materials. The three books already planned and confirmed — Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel e Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen — will normally be released in Brazilian Portuguese, but they are the last.

Other languages will continue to be supported as normal. The languages currently featuring D&D content are English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese.

Magic content also loses localization

In the case of Magic: The Gathering cards, the justification was similar. The company cites “rising costs and changes in global demand”, that is, low sales of this type of content in certain regions.

Still, in the statement, she argues that the game “keeps growing” and that she tries “make it accessible to the widest possible audience”. The franchise has been available in our language for the longest time: since the mid-1990s, close to its original release.

The promotional packs for the Outlaws of Thunder Junction series will no longer be released in our language. O The last localized release in Portuguese for our country is Modern Horizons 3.

In the case of content in Brazilian Portuguese, one of the arguments is that Letters in English are becoming increasingly popular in the country, which would not justify maintaining language support. Similar decisions were made with letters in Russian and Simplified Chinese.

For now, the game Magic: The Gathering Arena is still localized for our language. Furthermore, Wizards of the Coast guarantees that will not abandon the national scene in terms of “playing opportunities” nor stop making the products available — now all in English.
