Ubisoft finally listened to its fans and is taking Assassin’s Creed Shadows to Feudal Japan, a period of history that has served as the background for several iconic games – as Ghost of Tsushima e Nioh.

Another encouraging news is the confirmation that one of the protagonists of Assassin’s Creed Shadows It will be Yasukea legendary African samurai who served under the orders of feudal lord Oda Nobunaga in the Sengoku era.

Unlike Altair, Ezio Auditore, Eivor and many other fictional names in the series, Yasuke will be the first protagonist of the franchise Assassin’s Creed based on a historical figure. Do you want to know its origins? So, check out everything about the samurai in the new special Voxel!

The origin of Yasuke

There are theories that Yasuke is originally from Mozambique, but some historians venture to say that he is from Angola or Ethiopia. He is also believed to have been the only person of African descent to have achieved the rank of samurai.

Yasuke’s existence was documented in Jesuit letters as well as in the Shincho Kokiby Ota Gyuichi — a chronicle written by Nobunaga and published in the Edo period.

He arrived in Japan in 1579, when he was bodyguard to the Italian Alessandro Valignano, responsible for inspect Jesuit missions in the Indies.

Well, a muscular 1.8 meter tall warrior didn’t need much to attract the attention of the Japanese — and of a nobleman, in particular, who was about to change both his life and the destiny of Japan itself.

How did Yasuke become a samurai for one of the most fearsome generals in Japanese history?

Upon hearing about Yasuke’s rumors in Kyoto, Oda Nobunaga, known as the first great general who unified Japan, went to meet him.

There are stories that the feudal lord was so impressed by the warrior’s stature that he held a banquet and even presented him with a wad of money.

Feared by many as “the man who has the strength of 10 men”, Yasuke became Nobunaga’s right-hand man and served at his side. He fought in at least two major battles with the general.

A queda of Nobunaga and the name of Yasuke

The first was the battle of Tenmokuzan, in 1582, considered the last stand of the Takeda clan. While the second was Honno-ji, which occurred in Kyoto also in 1582, when the forces of General Akechi Mitsuhide surrounded the Honno temple in an attempted coup.

The incident was marked by the great outcome of Oda Nobunaga, who, instead of surrendering to the traitor general, preferred to commit seppuku — a suicide ritual. With that, Yasuke immediately went to fight alongside the heir, Oda Nobutada, who was also subsequently captured.

Alone, Yasuke opted for his Western side and offered loyalty to Mitsuhide — who snubbed his attitude and called him a “beast who knew nothing.” As for what happened next, things aren’t so clear, which only adds to the mythology of his story. Some claim that he returned to serve the Jesuits.

What’s the difference between Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Yasuke and real-life Yasuke?

It is still not very clear what Ubisoft’s approach will be with Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows — whether it will be fantasy or more faithful to real life. However, there are no reports in the story that the samurai betrayed Nobunaga, but it seems that things will be different in the game.

It is worth remembering that players will also be able to play with a second protagonist, the kunoichi Naoe Fujibayashi, daughter of Fujibayashi Nagato. Just like Yasuke’s case, the legendary leader of the Iga clan also existed in real life — and had a fierce rivalry against Nobunaga’s command.

The trailer suggests that Yasuke will somehow join the kunoichi. So, perhaps, it is possible to theorize that both will fight together against Nobunaga’s attempts to unify Japan. Better to wait for more information so as not to jump to any hasty conclusions!
