Clair Obscu: Expedition 33 is a shift RPG developed by Sandfall Interactive, inspired by classics such as Final Fantasy and Persona, with a unique aesthetic based on French Belle Époque.

The game features an emotional turnaround early on, where the main character, Gustave, is killed, a decision that started as a joke/joke during development.

The idea of killing Gustave came up from a conversation between director Guillaume Brooche and main screenwriter Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, while working on a previous project called We Lost.

“What if we kill him? What if we kill the main character?” Said Svedberg-Yen, then Guillaume Brooche replied, “Yeah, that’s a good idea,” he said. “Let’s do that.”

Guillaume Brooche immediately supported the idea, considering it essential for the game’s themes, such as loss and mourning, inspired by iconic moments such as Aerith’s death in Final Fantasy VII.

“I think this is very important for the themes of the game,” explains Broocha, all these years later. “That we invite the player to feel the loss, and there is nothing that convey this message better than simply killing the main character.”

Gustave’s death was planned to make players feel the loss, both in the narrative and gameplay, by losing the progress in the character.

Clair Obscu: Expedition 33 is available for PC, PS5, Xbox Series S | X and Game Pass.
