With almost 30 years of history, the franchise Resident Evil is certainly one of the most valuable and iconic properties in video games worldwide. Sure, the series has its ups and downs — but the potential will always remain, after all, it contains some of the best and most nostalgic games ever made. And that’s why it will always attract new curious eyes.
In essence, Resident Evil is the king of horror and has terrified countless fans over the years — though he has done so in a variety of different ways. As such, it’s impossible to recommend a single experience that captures absolutely everything the franchise stands for. So let’s take it one step at a time!
Best Resident Evil games on PS2
In this special, the Voxel cast the best games in the franchise Resident Evil released for the PlayStation 2 — and there must be some names here that many don’t know, huh?
Remember that, currently, the vast majority of them are only playable with an original copy on the PS2 — but, of course, we can always resort to emulators. In any case, check out the names below!
6. Resident Evil Survivor 2 CODE: Veronica
Following the same premise of Resident Evil Survivor from PS1, the first game in the franchise to bet on a new formula, Resident Evil Survivor 2 CODE: Veronica addresses the same events as CODE: Veronica — but from a new perspective. With this, tank movement and static scenarios give way to the first-person camera in the best style House of the Dead.
Here, players take control of Claire Redfield and Steve Burnside. They are trapped on Rockfort Island, an Umbrella Corporation military installation that has been overrun by zombies and other BOWs. Their mission is to escape the island while battling hordes of enemies and solving other puzzles along the way.
One of the most notable peculiarities of Resident Evil Survivor 2 CODE: Veronicaof course, is its limited-time mode, where players must complete each level within a certain period of time — something that is pretty standard in experiences of the genre.
5. Resident Outbreak File #2
Released in 2005 for PlayStation 2, Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 was a sort of expansion to the first game in the line. Despite offering the same eight playable characters as its predecessor, the sequel brought five new stages for players — which allowed them to see the chaos in Raccoon City from other perspectives.
The two spin-offs of Outbreak offer a completely different and more cooperative approach compared to other games in the franchise. On the initial screen, you could assemble a team of survivors with their own particularities to face the dangers of the zombie apocalypse.
However, Outbreak File #2 was absolutely overshadowed by the release of Resident Evil 4 a year earlier. Shinji Mikami’s classic set such a high standard (not only for the franchise but for the gaming industry in general) that the spin-off’s weaknesses, such as the lack of decent multiplayer support and voice chat, became even more glaring.
4. Resident Evil: Dead Aim
Resident Evil Dead Aim was released for PlayStation 2 in 2003 — and was also part of the line Gun Survivor. The game mixed first-person shooter elements with third-person exploration and offered a very different type of experience than what fans of the franchise were used to.
The story of Dead Aim takes place on the Spencer Rain, a gigantic ship that belonged to Umbrella and was hijacked by Morpheus Durval — the game’s villain who infected everyone on board with the T-Virus. As a result, the US government sent agent Bruce McGivern to deal with the crisis.
Despite the somewhat weak plot, Resident Evil Dead Aim stood out in the PS2 era for being the first game in the franchise to use 100% of the light gun controller’s capabilities. “At its core, this is the game Resident Evil most fun we’ve ever played, and easily the best use of a light gun ever,” said the Eurogamer em 2003.
3. Resident Evil Outbreak
Being the Resident Evil right at the wrong time, RE Outbreak was the first game in the franchise to feature multiplayer. Released in 2003 for PlayStation 2, the idea behind the spin-off was brilliant: to have several survivors cooperating in different parts of Raccoon City — while the city experiences its first moments of the T-Virus outbreak.
Despite the good idea, the execution was not the best — at least in places where internet access was still in its infancy. Therefore, the best strategy was to play alone controlling one of the eight available characters, solving puzzles in familiar places and having nostalgic glimpses while exploring Raccoon City.
2. Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X
At the moment, the expectation of many fans of the franchise is that Resident Evil CODE: Veronica be Capcom’s next big remake. And it’s no wonder: this is a favorite of many — it embraces the tradition of the locked camera and brings one of the most iconic stories in the series.
Originally released for Dreamcast in 2000, the success of CODE: Veronica was overwhelming — causing Capcom to re-release, in 2001, a version with extras for PS2, including 10 more minutes of cinematics and other specific improvements.
Produced by Shinji Mikami, the game takes players to Rockfort Island, where one of Umbrella’s founders lived with his family. Continuing the original plan to find her brother, after the events of Raccoon City Claire Redfield goes to an Umbrella base in France in search of Chris, but ends up being captured and sent to the island.
CODE: Veronica It’s full of fantastic and iconic moments, like the reunion between Wesker and Chris, the fight against the Tyrant on the plane, and the fight against Alexia Ashford in the castle. In fact, a remake would be very welcome, Capcom!
1. Resident Evil 4
Redefining the standards of the gaming industry in general and inspiring games like itself God of War of 2018, Resident Evil 4 served as a gateway for many fans of the PS2-era franchise.
The over-the-shoulder camera, created and beautifully executed by Shinji Mikami, took third-person action games to a whole new level. Of course, the price for all the innovation it brought Resident Evil 4 What it brought was the franchise’s almost total detachment from horror — and total attachment to action. It was a watershed, but it certainly had a huge impact and it’s no wonder it’s the GOTY of 2005.
With the remake of Resident Evil 4released in 2023, Capcom managed to go further and further improve the formula. The result was a game that combines gameplay, horror and action in perfect harmony. The reimagining is respectable and an essential experience for any video game lover!
