A rather curious case was recently high after the players decided to read Ubisoft’s “End User License Contract” (EULA), where a frightening and funny stretch was found.
In the clause was the following excerpt: “After termination of the contract for any reason, you should immediately uninstall the product and destroy all copies of the product in your possession.”
It is noteworthy that this clause is not exclusive to Ubisoft and is also used by other large games companies, such as Larian Studios, Bethesda, Techland and others. After the incident, Ubisoft itself decided to speak up, explaining more detail.
“We saw recent reports about the Ubisoft end user license contract (Eula), focusing on a clause related to what happens when a license comes to an end. Thanks for raising this question!”
“As mentioned in some articles, this clause has not been new, it has been part of our Eula for over 10 years. It was originally created as a formal legal disposition to clarify that, once the license ends, the user no longer has rights to access or use the product.”
“We understand that the writing of the clause may sound overly rigid or to destroy the way players experience and value their games, and we are reviewing this clause as part of our continuous efforts to ensure that our policies reflect players’ expectations and the evolution of our industry.”
Overall, the clause is fictitious, as no company can do or verify this in practice. Anyway, Ubisoft has become a great target of negative criticism in recent days.
It remains to be seen if the community will understand or continue to attack Ubisoft.
