MindsEye studio begins layoffs after game flops

Officially released on June 10, MindsEye may be remembered in 2025 as one of its worst-rated games. With only 28 points on average on PS5 and 38 on PC, the title does not bring good predictions for the Build a Rocket Boy studio, which is already preparing to begin a process of layoffs.

According to IGN, sources close to the developer claim that up to 100 people could lose their jobs in the coming months . As the developer is headquartered in the UK, this means it had to open a 45-day consultation period before cutting these employees.

This number represents approximately 20% of the total staff of the creator of MindsEye, which has around 500 employees around the world. Of these, 300 people are located in the United Kingdom, while another 200 are spread across headquarters located in other countries.

During this 45-day period, the company must prove that it has no alternative but to actually lay off these employees . The affected employees, on the other hand, can use this period to find other opportunities — and the game’s failure suggests that even those who won’t be laid off should consider the possibility.

MindsEye Studio Confirms Rebrand

In a comment sent to IGN, Build Rocket Boy confirmed that it is indeed revamping its internal structure . It explains that while some employees will be reassigned to different roles, many of them will eventually become redundant and will no longer work on MindsEye or other projects.

Despite the negative situation, the developer’s message was optimistic . She states that the game’s release was just a first step, and that she “has many more challenges to overcome to grow her community in the coming years.” Much of this will be done in the form of updates for the game, which is in dire need of them.

Among the elements that resulted in MindsEye’s low scores is the fact that the technical side of the game is disastrous . This aspect only serves to highlight how short the campaign is and the narrative, although it has interesting moments, suffers due to its pace and lack of development.

The title was created as a
sort of gateway into the multiverse that Build a Rocket Boy is trying to build . The studio promises that, in future updates, the game’s story will be expanded “into the past and into the future.” In addition, new creation tools will be added to allow the community to continue expanding the adventure in varied and unexpected ways.
