The music of Worlds 2023, titled “GODS“, was launched by Riot Games in the early hours of this Wednesday (4), in partnership with the K-Pop group, NewJeans.
As usual, Riot also released an animation full of references as a music video. This year, the developer focused on showing the trajectory of Deft to the world title Worlds 2022.
Below, see our reaction to the song and the main references. If you prefer, we will also leave all references explained in text:
References from GODs, the Worlds 2023 song
Next, we will list all the references we found in the GODS clip, from Worlds 2023. As we discover other references, we will update the article. Some of the references were taken from a thread made by ShakarezLEC video producer.
00:08 – Faker and Deft in high school
Faker and Deft went to the same school in South Korea, and the clip shows them both in the same classroom. However, unlike the portrait, they were not the same class in real life.
In this part there is also a plaque at the school with the phrase “The most important thing is an unbreakable spirit.”. Deft said this in an interview at Worlds 2022 after losing to Rogue. The phrase became famous to the point of bursting the esports bubble and being used in the Football World Cup.
00:22 – Level difference between Deft and Faker
In the clip, it is shown that while Deft is making the Blue monster, Faker is already eliminating the Baron. This is a reference to the level at which both players started in League, as Faker has had a rapid rise through the ranked ranks.
While Faker already started by winning the LCK and Worlds in his first year, Deft still had to “climb” for some time, before reaching the top.
This becomes clearer when the transition to the next scene happens, which shows Deft watching Faker. That year, Faker played Zed in the Worlds 2023 final.
00:49 – Deft in his room training after not going to Worlds 2023
Similar to the previous reference, this time with a Worlds 2013 poster while Deft is playing in his room.
That year, Faker won the LoL world championship and Deft failed to qualify with MVP Blue. Maybe hence the previous reference, of the player eliminating the Blue Monster.
The room also has posters of Vi and Jinx. The shooter is one of the champions that Deft became known for, and she was released in League after Worlds 2023.
00:58 Deft vs Pawn no Worlds 2014
Deft is shown at Worlds 2014, his first world championship. At the time, ADC played for Samsung Blue, which was eliminated by its sister team, Samsung White, which won the competition.
In the clip, Deft is shown fighting and losing in the semifinal against Jayce de Pawn, Samsung White’s mid laner. The reference is to the final fight of the game between the two teams, in which Pawn eliminates Deft by giving Jayce a hammer.
01:11 – Deft e Meiko vs Rekkles no Worlds 2015
In Worlds 2015, this time Deft is already wearing the EDG uniform and is characterized as Sivir, along with support Meiko from Thresh. In the clip, they fight the sniper Rekkles, who is portrayed as Kennen.
Despite the characterization, players did not actually face these champions, despite having appeared in the series. That year, Fnatic eliminated EDG in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
01:27 – Passing time
Here Riot makes a kind of “Timelapse” with Deft spinning in his chair and being hit by various abilities. This is probably a reference to the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 in Deft’s career.
In 2016 and 2018 he was disqualified in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, and in 2017 and 2019 he didn’t even participate in the World Cup.
01:31 – Deft e Keria vs Showmaker e Canyon
In the confrontation in question, Deft is already part of the DRX team. He and support Keria are shown fighting DAMWON’s Showmaker and Canyon.
That year, DRX was eliminated from the quarterfinals, while DAMWON was the LoL world champion.
In the characterizations, Deft is Senna, Keria de Braum, Showmaker de Syndra and Canyon de Graves, champions used by players in the series in question.
2:13 – Quick reference to Hanwha Life
Here it shows Deft at “rock bottom” and in the Hanwha Life uniform, the team he played for in 2021. The team even qualified for the Worlds, but again fell in the quarterfinals.
The scene is used as a transition to his arrival at DRX. In the clip, DRX players are shown giving Deft a hand, helping him get out of that “hole”. This hole is not Hanwha Life, but not achieving the long-awaited world title.
2:25 – DRX no Worlds 2022
Here the entire DRX team is shown in the center of an Arena and Meiko, characterized as Renata Glasc, at the top of the Arena, with an air of superiority.
The scene has two meanings: showing Meiko, an EDG player, fighting against his old teammate (Deft) and also sending the message that DRX was discredited that year. The team qualified as seed 4 in the LCK, was not at its best and still had to play in the Entry Phase of the competition.
Furthermore, Meiko was the current Worlds champion, which put him in this “superiority” status. Another point is that with the victory, Deft finally managed to break the quarter-final curse, advancing to the world championship semi-finals for the first time in his career.
02:38 – Semifinal and victory against Gen.G
Here it shows Draft, characterized as Varus, fighting against top laner Doran (Renekton), from Gen.G. Gen.G was the current LCK champion and one of the favorites to reach the grand final of Worlds 2022.
Another important point is that Doran is shown as a giant, compared to DEft. This is a reference to game 4, in which the player was very strong against the champion, but DRX managed to win the match anyway.
02:49 – Deft vs Keria in the grand final of Worlds 2022
One of the highest points of the clip. Again Deft meets a former teammate, support Keria, who is at T1. However, on this occasion it is all or nothing as it is the final of the world championship.
02:57 Deft vs Faker connects the end of the battle with the beginning of the clip
The clip began by telling the story of Deft and Faker at the same school and, later, Faker was already successful in his first year of career, becoming the greatest LoL player of all time.
Now, Deft meets Faker again, this time in the World Cup final, and manages to beat the player.
It’s worth remembering that in this part of the clip, Faker is dressed as Viktor, Caitlyn’s Deft and Karma’s Keria, champions used in game five of the grand final between T1 and DRX.
3:10 DRX team arrives to help Deft
In this part of the clip, the DRX team arrives to help DEft, who is currently cornered by Faker and Keria.
The image shows the Bard’s Magical Journey ability, bringing Deft’s four companions: Zeka (Azir), Pyosik (Hecarim), Beryl (Bard), Kingen (Aatrox). The champions were chosen by DRX in the last game of the final.
3:26 – Moment when Deft wins the World Cup
Here, we see Deft taking off his headphones and realizing he won the world championship. Soon after, he is hugged by his teammates, Zeka and BeryL.
3:44 – Reference to other young and talented players on the scene
To end the clip, Riot pays homage to several players from the global LoL scene, including Brazilian Ayu, FURIA’s current ADC. The players that appear are: Ayu (FURIA), Hans Sama (G2), Jopsedeodo (Estral), 369 (JDG), Chovy (Gen.G), Levi (GAM), Yutapon (DFM) and Azhi (PSG).
GODs song lyrics
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
(Hey) That’s why you came
Blood on the game ball
All falling like heavy rain
(Uh) This is your moment
Eyes on the pulpit, young man
(I) think the church just opened
And they’re singing your praises la-la-la
Screaming your name out loud la-la-la
One more step, you’re immortal now, because
When you play GOD
When you play GOD
They will collapse one by one
Then they go straight towards the sun like the day my kingdom won
Baby we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
Yes we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
Welcome to the big show
Next on the climb
Is that your name on the rafters?
Brief moment of silence
The bad girl woke up, chose violence
And they’re singing my praises la-la-la
Screaming my name out loud la-la-la
That’s why we’re immortal now, because
When you play GOD
When you play GOD
They will collapse one by one
Then they go straight towards the sun like the day my kingdom won
Baby we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
Oh yes we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
I’m on my knees
Pray for glory
Will anyone read this unlikely story?
I can’t get lost again
Help me lift this heart
Heart, indestructible
When you play GOD
When you play GOD
They will collapse one by one
Then they go straight towards the sun like the day my kingdom won
When you play GOD
When you play GOD
They will collapse one by one
Then they go straight towards the sun like the day my kingdom won
Baby we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
Oh yes we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
Oh yes we are
DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-GODS
