Will Injustice 3 have a connection to the new DCU? Ed Boon responds to Voxel

It’s been a while since DCnauts saw a game from the franchise Injustice hitting the market — the last one, in fact, was launched at the beginning of 2017. After the debut of Mortal Kombat 11 In 2019, NetherRealm Studios was expected to work on the third superhero game. But that’s not exactly what happened.

Although it presents improvements, it does not innovate at all, Mortal Kombat 1 was released in 2023 — but did not have the acclaim of its predecessor. Now, naturally, the expectation is that NetherRealm’s next game will be Injustice 3.

Some fans of the saga are even questioning whether the sequel will have some potential connection to James Gunn’s new DC cinematic universe.

DC Studios has a full catalog for the coming years

For those who are unaware of the news, James Gunn, director of the Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxywas named, in October 2022, co-chief executive of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran.

This, of course, implies several changes to the old DC cinematic universe — so much so that Gunn has already confirmed an extensive list of new films for the coming years.

• The Authority — Superhero film from the DC universe with a theme similar to that of The Boys;
• Paradise Lost — HBO series inspired by Game of Thrones which will explore the origin of the Amazons of Wonder Woman;
• The Brave and the Bold — Film that will introduce a new Batman and focus on Damian Wayne’s Robin;
• Booster Gold — HBO series that will focus on an “idiot from the future who travels to the present to pretend to be a hero”;
• Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — Project that promises to address a much more aggressive Supergirl;
• Swamp Thing — Horror film about the villain Swamp Thing, which will focus on Dr. Alec Holland.

Will the new DC Studios universe have some kind of connection to Injustice 3?

Jammes Gunn and Peter Safran will have a lot of work to do to bring so much content to Warner’s catalog. Gunn even stated that the entire new DC Studios universe, both in cinemas, series and video games, will be connected in some way. But can we expect a specific connection with Injustice 3?

Well, the first major collaboration with this new universe will not come in the third superhero game — but rather in Mortal Kombat 1. Peacemaker, charismatic anti-hero of the new film Suicide squadwhich even had its own series on HBO Max, will arrive as DLC for the game’s cast of fighters.

Questioned by Voxel whether James Gunn has ever made a call to talk about a potential Injustice 3 and its possible connections with the new DC Studios, Ed Boon, veteran of Mortal Kombat and current boss of NetherRealm, replied: “in fact, I haven’t even met him yet.”

“There’s a big plan for the new movies, that’s a fact. But for our games, it would probably be whatever direction we would like if we did Injustice 3“the director told Voxel. “We wouldn’t feel limited by what they’re doing in the movies,” she concluded.

What do we know about Injustice 3 so far?

There’s a lot of cool content coming to the DC Studios universe and it would be really great news to see that some of it could be connected in some way to Injustice 3. That, Of course, this is just speculation on our part..

Unfortunately, very little is known about the sequel — or even whether it is currently in production.. However, Boon told the ComicBook in August last year, which has already been gathering ideas for the game since the launch of Injustice 2 em 2017.

“The way it works for me, I can’t say the same about others, is that I always have a notebook file on my computer with ideas like, ‘Oh, we could do this, we could do that.’ Injustice 3 when we were in Injustice 2 still,” said the developer. “There is always a list of new ideas and concepts that are examined and analyzed. Therefore, there is a file.”
