Rockstar is one of the most respected game studios in the world because it is one of the few that sets trends in the market. In the PS2 era, the developer simply shone by bringing great adventures in a relatively small window of time. Well, that has changed over the years and now fans must wait (and wait) for some release from the company — as is the case with GTA 6.

Just to remember some of the precious gems from Rockstar’s catalog in the PS2 era, we had the debut of GTA 3 — which in itself was already a great and important milestone for open world games. Then we also had the legendary GTA Vice City e San Andreasnot to mention other franchises such as Manhunt, Bully, Midnight Club and many others.

Rockstar released 25 games between 2000 and 2008

Between 2000 and 2008, Rockstar released no less than 25 new games. With the arrival of the PS3 in 2006, this rate of releases slowed drastically, with GTA 4 marking a new era for the company.

Between 2008 and 2013, the studio released the iconic GTA 4but it also brought new air to the franchise Max Payne with the third game. Of course, Red Dead Redemption may have been one of Rockstar’s most accurate shots in that generation, which flew by until the release of GTA 5 em 2013.

Bom, GTA 5 certainly consolidated Rockstar’s sovereignty in the market — and to this day the game continues to sell in droves. But the idle period increased: it took five years between the game and Red Dead Redemption 2which was released in 2018. And now, GTA 6 arrives only in 2025 — a long seven years after Arthur Morgan’s great adventure.

Why does Rockstar take so long to release new games?

But Why does Rockstar take so long to release a new game these days? Well, the answer to this question involves several factors — from changes in consumption habits to the arrival of new technologies.

In any case, the fact is that the market has changed: now that the preference is for online games, the company has had to invest heavily in new content to GTA Online — which certainly reduces the time to invest in new games. Even a story DLC for GTA 5 was cancelled so the studio could focus more on multiplayer.

Furthermore, Rockstar also needs to meet the high standards imposed by the public and by itself on the franchise. GTAwhich requires a gigantic level of perfectionism. This, of course, also takes time.

Rockstar values ”perfection”

When asked about Rockstar’s internal development schedule in May of this year, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two (the publisher that owns the studio), revealed that the company does everything to be thorough and meet the public’s expectations.

“In the case of an extraordinary title, for which there are extraordinary expectations, it’s not really about bugs. It’s about creating an experience that no one has seen before, and Rockstar Games strives for perfection. Perfection is hard to measure,” Zelnick explained.

This alone makes it clear that time is precious within the studio — time that could not be invested in other properties, as was the case in the PS2 era. But fans really miss that, don’t they?

GTA 6 will be released between September and December 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version, however, has not yet been commented on by the studio — but, naturally, it will arrive on the platform later.
