Officially announced on July 27 by NetherRealm Studios, the Kaos Reigns expansion promises to bring even more violence and twists to Mortal Kombat 1. Starting right after the events of the game’s main story, it will expand the series’ timeline concepts to give more prominence to the villain Havik.
As shown in the trailer released by the developer, the new version of the character is quite different from the one already in the game. Fully embracing chaos as his lifestyle, the alternative incarnation of the fighter promises to be quite cruel and has the sole objective of “watching the world burn”.
While this may not make much sense to anyone who has only played Mortal Kombat 1, the franchise’s past provides further explanation about this intriguing character. With it, we can better understand his motivations and visualize how fearsome the villain of Reigns or Kaos really is.
Who is Havik in Mortal Kombat?
Havik’s first appearance was in Mortal Kombat Deception, released almost 20 years ago, on October 4, 2004. With his main physical characteristic being the lower part of his face, which appears to have been ripped off, the character originates from the Chaosrealm and became known as a Cleric of Chaos.

Wearing formal clothing worthy of his position, his sole objective is to spread anarchy, disorder and ruin wherever he goes. This doesn’t exactly make him a bad figure, as his nature means he doesn’t have many alliances and joins the sides that seem to be the most efficient in achieving his goals.
Another striking feature of the character is his brutal fighting style, in which he dislocates limbs and even rips off parts of his body as combat tools. This is only possible thanks to an enhanced healing factor, coupled with the fact that what other people see as pain and torture, he feels as pleasure.
Within his playable appearances in Mortal Kombat Deception and Armageddon, he has always tended to side with the evil side — though he disagreed with Onaga and wanted to destroy him. In his non-canonical ending, he uses Blaze’s power to completely change reality, warping it to the point of making it unrecognizable.
The post-reboot character
After the series’ reboot in 2011, Havik continued to be part of its universe, but was no longer controllable by players. He appeared in the endings of some characters and in comics, always acting indirectly as an incentivizer of chaos and a great beneficiary of actions that led to it.

In Mortal Kombat 1, he resurfaces as a figure with slightly different origins and goals. Within the universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang, Chaosrealm no longer existsmaking the fighter a person who has origins in the Orderrealm/Seido and who ended up rebelling against its laws.
In the most recent universe of the series, he is born with the name Dairou, who was a separate character in Deception. In common, they have the fact that they were wronged by the rulers of the kingdom and framed for crimes they did not commit. All of this is the result of an exaggerated desire to try to maintain order, regardless of the cost.
With this, Havik began to become obsessed with changing reality and awakened within himself several desires for anarchy and chaos that, in this reality, were a little more directed towards justice. However, he continues to have a more self-focused personality and has no problem allying himself with Quan Chi or manipulating others to achieve his goals.
Upon completing Mortal Kombat 1 with the character, players can see how He manipulates Rain into using his powers over water to completely destroy Seido.. The wizard ends up deeply regretting this decision, later handing himself over to Mileena so that she can judge him for his crimes.
Titan Havik promises more chaos
Getting further into the spoiler realm of the most recent game in the series, its final moment is the great Battle of Armageddon. It is even bigger than the one that gives its name to the 2006 game, bringing together several versions of the various characters that star in the franchise — many of them non-selectable.
During this confrontation we see the first appearance of the Titan Havik, who will be the villain of the Khaos Reigns DLC. This alternate appearance of the character has an even more deformed face and seems to embrace chaos even more, wearing a helmet that is closer to the original design created by NetherRealm.
In the game’s post-credits scene, he allies himself with alternate versions of Shang Tsung, Reiko, Tanya and Quan Chi who belonged to the dark timeline, which is now destroyed. However, this pleases the character, who has as his plan to provoke another great battle between timelines that, this time, will have an even greater duration and impact.
All this is only possible given the fact that, in your reality, the Titan Havik was responsible for defeating Kronika and has reached a level of power similar to that of Liu Kang. Thus, he promises to have great potential to spread chaos throughout the multiverse, making the peace found by the God of Fire not last long.
