End of an era, because after 20 years, Makoto Yukimura’s manga Vinland Saga ended with the release of the final chapter (220) on July 24, 2025, published in Kodansha’s K Manga app.
Started in April 2005 at the Weekly Shonen Magazine, the manga moved to Monthly Afternoon in October of the same year, where she remained until her closure.
Vinland Saga is the second completed work of Makoto Yukimura, after the science fiction manga under the name of plans, which also have an anime. The creator of the work spoke on social networks and thanked the fans.
“Thank you so much for having followed for so long. With this, we came to the end of Thorfinn’s long adventure. I wanted to portray the growth process of a child who, when going through various experiences, becomes an adult. Can I convey this satisfactorily?”
“Growing up generally, I think it means becoming an adult. But then the question arises: What is it to be an adult? I spent 20 years thinking about it while drawing the manga and, in the end, I came to the conclusion that… perhaps being a kind person. It is probably that. The purpose of growth is to become a kind person.”
“As I drew the final chapter, I wondered if we today were able to become more kindly people than those a thousand years ago. Anyway, I feel that I took a great weight off the shoulders. I’m glad I could end.”
“After all, it was 20 years… At that time, I could have become sick or suffered an accident and may not be able to continue drawing, right? It’s tense to maintain such a long serialization. 20 years ago, I thought something like: ‘It will be about 20 volumes, it will take about 10 years… At that time, I need to be careful not to have an accident or have the manga canceled.’
“But of course, there was no way my plans came out exactly as expected! Really, thank you all for accompanying this long story to the end.”
Considered one of the greatest manga Seinen, alongside Berserk and Vagabond, Vinland Saga reached great critical acclaim, even without reaching the same sales as the other two.
The manga gained an anime adaptation by Wit Studio, with the second season produced by Mappa, increasing its popularity. The story follows Thorfinn’s journey.
