Steam is a platform that has gained recognition in recent years by allowing the launch of “adult” games (such as h3ntais), involving completely explicit elements and in some cases heavier topics.
However, Valve, the company behind Steam, updated its rules to ban content processor policies (example: Visa or Mastercard). The new guideline highlights the prohibition of “certain types of exclusively adult content”, although it does not specify detailed examples.
Games with controversial themes, such as inco -sis, were removed from the platform. Now Valve has decided to comment on the subject, explaining more detail.
“We have recently been informed that certain Steam games can violate the rules and standards established by our payment processors, card networks and related banks,” Valve spokesman told Eurogamer told. “As a result, we are removing these games from the Steam store, because the loss of payment methods would prevent customers from buying other titles and game content at Steam.”
Valve is offering application credits ($ 100) to affected developers for future games on the platform. To contextualize, credits are required to publish games on Steam.
There are concerns about the normalization of financial censorship, with banks deciding what is acceptable, which can limit the creative freedom of developers.
Valve did not specify which payment processors, banks or games were directly affected.
