United States President Donald Trump has just announced a new 50% tariff on imported products of Brazilian origin.
The measure will take effect on August 1, 2025. In his official statement, Trump justified the decision based on two main factors: persecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro and Brazil’s alleged attacks on American companies.
According to Trump, Bolsonaro’s trial represents a “witch hunt” that needs to be interrupted. He also accuses the Brazilian government to undermine free elections, censor US digital platforms, and adopt unfair business practices.
“The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro-a highly respected leader around the world during his term, including the United States-is an international misfortune. This trial should not be happening. It’s a witch hunt that should run out immediately!”
The US President also pointed out that the business relationship with Brazil has not been fair or reciprocal due to “Tariff and non -tariff policies and commercial barriers in Brazil”.
“The 50% represent much less than necessary to create a level field of level between our countries. And this is necessary to correct the serious injustices of the current regime. As you know, there will be no fare if Brazil, or Brazilian companies, decide to build or manufacture products within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to ensure fast, professional and routine approvals.”
The new fare will be applied in an accumulative manner, ie it will focus on any other existing rate. Trump also warned that if Brazil decides to retaliate, any new rate on American products will be added to the 50% announced.
Finally, Trump revealed to have instructed Jamieson Greer, a US representative of trade, to start a formal investigation into “Continuous attacks from Brazil to the digital trade activities of American companies”.
Trump’s decision has already been causing concern in various sectors of Brazil. Producers of materials such as steel, aluminum, soy, beef and others should be the most affected.
