Virtuos believes that Nintendo Switch 2 is able to easily receive any 60 frames per second game at Xbox Series S. The statement was made by Eoin O’grady, technical director of Black Shamrock (subsidiary of Virtuos), in an interview with WCCFTECH. The studio, which has worked on Ports such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077 and Hogwarts Legacy, explained that Nintendo’s console offers “slightly inferior” performance to Series S, but that the inclusion of technologies like DLSS compensates for this difference.
In terms of GPU, Switch 2 is closer to Series S, especially due to DLSS support, which allows you to climb resolution and relieve the graphical load without significant visual losses. On the CPU side, the Nintendo console is closer to PS4, falling short of Xbox Series S. Still, according to O’Grady, many modern games are more dependent on the GPU than on CPU, which favors the new console when the games are well optimized.
In practice, this means that any game already released for 60 FPS stable performance should be easily adapted to Switch 2. The same applies to 30 fps games that are more demanding in graphic terms than in terms of physics or artificial intelligence. But projects with more dependent elements of the CPU, such as complex physics systems or detailed animations, will require more work and optimization from the teams of bearers.
According to O’Grady, this supplementary effort may have increased costs and a direct impact on production times. Even so, Virtuos believes that the potential of the new console is high, especially given its portable nature and the popularity of the platform.
Since the development kits have been available, several studios are already working on Ports and adaptations. The expectation, according to industry sources, is that Switch 2 will be able to maintain interest from the public looking for AAA games on a portable platform, which could help prolong Nintendo’s success cycle after more than 130 million units sold from the original switch.
