Superman spoiler below! Keep your own risk!

In Superman’s latest film, fans were taken by surprise by a significant change in the origin of the hero: his parents sent him to Earth with the mission of mastering humans and encouraged him to take as many wives as he wanted to procreate – a striking contrast with the generally benevolent image of the characters.

Since this revelation is made through a video message, many imagined that it could be a manipulation made by some villain, such as Brainiac. However, director James Gunn came public to end speculation.

In a recent interview, Gunn even showed some surprise with fans’ doubt, stating that they tried to make it as clear as possible that the message was real.

How could anyone think it was not real? I don’t understand. In the tests we did, people said: “Is this real?” You know, I was, nobody trusts anything. Ok. In the movie, the fantastic Lord says it’s real. This is the fantastic Lord, as smart as Lex Luthor. So we have the Secretary of Defense saying, “Find whatever you want Luthor, but it’s real”.

And then the outcome is that Ghurkos and Lex are walking together, and Ghurkos says: “Ah, you manipulated the message, that’s great.” And Lex replies: “It’s not a message. It’s not ‘manipulated’. It’s real. And who would say they would be his own parents to knock him down?”

For James Gunn, this approach reinforces that Superman acts on his own, doing good not by imposition of third parties or for a predetermined destination – but by choice.
