In March of this year Steam launched the beta of Steam Familya feature that replaced Steam Family Sharing and Steam Family View to centralize all game sharing tools in one place. Now, Valve has finally made the feature available to all members of the platform.

The new game sharing feature will allow up to five people from the same household to share their respective Steam game libraries.. Each of them will receive an “Adult” or “Child” badge — and this, of course, also implies the creation of new parental control features.

Developers will also be able to choose whether or not to support the feature. If a game currently supports Steam Family Sharing, which was previously in place, it will automatically be available on Steam Family.

What parental features are available in Steam Family?

It is worth remembering that Players will not need to be online to play a game shared through Steam Family — as long as the title supports the feature. All games will be automatically shared among all family members.

However, if there are children in the group, the “leader” can use parental controls to prohibit gambling. The responsible adult can take the following actions:

  • Allow access to appropriate games;
  • Restrict access to the Steam Store, Steam Community, and Steam Chat;
  • Set play time limits (per hour or per day);
  • View game time reports;
  • Approve or deny requests from children to play for longer or access certain features (temporarily or permanently);
  • Recover a child’s account if they have forgotten their password.

Is it possible to play the same game at the same time through Steam Family?

Furthermore, If two family members want to play the same game at the same time, they will have to buy two different copies.. An adult in the group can also remove any member from the Steam Family at any time.

“Let’s say you are part of a family of four and you have a copy of Portal 2 and one of Half-Life. At any time, any member can play Portal 2 and the other can play Half-Life“, Valve explained.

“If two of you want to play Portal 2 at the same time, another person in the family will need to purchase a copy of the game. After this purchase, there will be two copies of Portal 2 available across the family and any two members can play at the same time,” he concluded.
