Sonic will become a card in Magic! The Gathering

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will arrive in the Magic universe with three special collections from the Secret Lair line, all scheduled for release on July 14. The cards feature iconic SEGA characters reimagined with exclusive art in limited editions sold directly on the official Secret Lair website.

The collaboration between SEGA and Wizards of the Coast includes three releases, each with seven cards. The first one revealed, called Friends & Foes, features characters such as Sonic, Shadow, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Amy and Knuckles. The collection combines the characters with cards already in the game, but now with new looks and themed names.

Magic! The Gathering signs new partnership

The cards will be available in standard ($29.99) and foil ($39.99) versions. This partnership follows the traditional Secret Lair format of limited-time releases sold directly to consumers outside of Magic’s regular expansion cycle. This approach has become popular in recent years with collaborations with Final Fantasy, Deadpool, and Tomb Raider.

The second set revealed, called Chasing Adventure, adapts well-known cards featuring characters from the Sonic universe. Among them, Sol Ring appears with Sonic art; Shadow illustrates the Deadly Dispute card, while Tails, Amy and Knuckles appear on other cards such as Fabricate and Unexpected Windfall. The manufacturer highlighted that it wants to combine Sonic’s nostalgic look with one of the most popular TCG games in the world.

The third part of the collaboration is called Turbo Gear and focuses on artifact cards. It features items and vehicles from the Sonic franchise in special versions of cards already popular in the Commander format, such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. The Tornado aircraft, piloted by Tails in the games, transforms into a version of the Weatherlight card, which can even serve as a commander under current rules.

Difference between crossover with Final Fantasy

However, it is important to pay attention to an important detail about the availability of these cards. This is because unlike the recent crossover with Final Fantasy, which featured a complete collection and pre-defined decks, the partnership with Sonic follows the Secret Lair standard with limited batches.

The partnership between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy, released on June 13 , has achieved record sales. In this way, it has consolidated itself in the Universes Beyond format as something of extreme importance for Wizards of the Coast. This is because it has become the best-selling crossover in the history of the franchise .

Additionally, Wizards of the Coast continues to expand the Magic! The Guethering universe and showcase the success of the trading card game. This is because it has confirmed the development of a live-action Magic film , followed by a series, which expands the brand’s reach beyond cards.
