Romero Games denies rumors of closure after canceling funded project

Recently, news broke that a publisher — allegedly Microsoft — had pulled funding from a project by Romero Games, a studio led by veteran John Romero, which led to its closure. Now, Romero Games itself has spoken out publicly, clarifying that much of the information it released was incorrect.

According to the official statement, the studio did in fact lose funding for its project, which ended up being canceled. Although the company did not name the publisher involved, it indicated that players have already been able to deduce its identity based on “public information” — a clue that practically confirms that it is Microsoft.

Despite the blow, Romero Games has reiterated that it is not closing down its operations. The studio is reassessing its team, but claims to be doing everything possible to move forward. In fact, it has already received proposals from other publishers interested in continuing the project.

We would like to clarify recent reports regarding the situation at Romero Games. These reports contain inaccuracies, and we feel it is important to set the record straight.

  • Funding for our project was cancelled and consequently our game was cancelled.
  • Due to confidentiality agreements, we cannot disclose the identity of the publisher, although some people may be able to infer it from public information.
  • As a result, we need to re-evaluate the entire studio team.
  • Romero Games is not closed , and we are doing everything in our power to ensure that this does not happen. Any suggestion to the contrary is incorrect. In fact, we were in the studio today to discuss next steps with the team.
  • We have already been contacted by several publishers interested in helping us complete the game, and we are currently evaluating these opportunities.

We really appreciate the support we’ve received and will share further updates as soon as possible.
