PS5 Pro is equivalent to a PC with which graphics card?

Announced with much anticipation, the PlayStation 5 Pro features powerful hardware with many premium specifications. The highlight is the GPU, which features more units and possibly a new architecture. But which graphics card sold on the market is equivalent to the PS5 Pro?

Before answering this question, it is worth noting that the specifications of a console do not automatically translate to the parts of a PC. It is common to look at the technical specifications and compare products, but the performance of a video game is almost always unique.

The reason for this is that the number of different options and versions on a computer means that its performance is very different. On a console, the hardware will always be the same and the games are developed specifically for it, providing better optimization.

PS5 Pro usa AMD

Sony has revealed that it has kept the PlayStation 5 Pro with a chip developed by AMD, in which the big news is the improvement of the GPU. This component is physically larger and has 67% more CUs (Compute Units), something that should greatly improve performance.

With the standard PlayStation 5, released in 2020 and with 36 CUs, it was common to equate the console with the Radeon RX 6700 XT. This is a praised graphics card from AMD’s last generation, which has 40 of these structures and RDNA 2 microarchitecture.

For the PlayStation 5 Pro, the closest we can get is a Radeon RX 7800 XT, with 60 Compute Units and updated RDNA. This model is not as popular as the previous card, but it has good performance and is sold at competitive prices in the Brazilian market.

This is a GPU released in August 2023, designed to run games at 1440p with maximum quality. However, with the help of technologies such as FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 and the frame generator (AFMF), the graphics card can run games at 4K without much difficulty — as long as you reduce the visual quality a little.

This matches up well with the PS5 Pro and PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), the console’s upscaling technique. So it’s possible that the device will have similar performance to this card.

What about Nvidia?

As much as AMD has had a very interesting portfolio of GPUs in recent years, Nvidia is the one that dominates this segment. Analyzing the specifications coldly and comparing it to the Radeon RX 7800 XT, the Nvidia card that most resembles the PS5 Pro is between the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 SUPER.

The 7800 XT is usually superior to the 4070, but there are sometimes a tie when it comes to ray tracing or upscaling. This leaves room for the RTX 4070 SUPER to be superior to both of these models — although it is also more expensive.

PS5 Pro gets closer to mid-range GPUs

It’s very likely that the PlayStation 5 Pro will have performance very similar to these graphics cards, especially since they are all designed for 1440p gaming and use upscaling to 4K resolution. In other words, the console is basically equivalent to the GPUs in the “premium mid-range” market.

Combined with an Intel Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, users should see performance very similar to Sony’s new console. However, we’ll have to wait until the PS5 Pro launches on November 7 to see for ourselves whether the console really has that much more firepower.
