NetherRealm Studios, the developer led by Ed Boon, recently laid off its mobile games team — resulting in the layoff of over 50 employees within the company. Well, it didn’t take long for the studio to announce that Mortal Kombat: Onslaughtthe franchise’s mobile game, will have its servers shut down on October 21st of this year.

The game features a story centered around the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who seeks to regain his power by collecting relics from across the realms. Players are tasked with aiding Raiden and assembling a team of fighters to thwart the villain’s plans.

The spin-off based on a team-based action RPG was released in October last year for Android and iOS, but now its days are numbered. The North American studio removed the game from both platforms last Monday (22) — but left the microtransactions available until August 23.

After that, on October 21st, just over a year after its release, Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be completely shut down, which means it will also no longer be playable for fans.

The announcement was made last Saturday (20), in a post on X (formerly Twitter), through the game’s official profile. “It was an honor to create this game for our community,” said the statement on the social network.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 1 continues to receive updates
