Released in June of this year with several problems that go beyond its technical issues, the game MindsEye is being prepared for a future “re-release” . The news was given to Rocket Boy studio employees by producer Leslie Benzies, who believes that the game was “sabotaged”.
For the producer, this happened both internally and externally and, therefore, the game ended up selling less than expected. The allegations come at a time of crisis for the studio, which has already started a process of layoffs after the title apparently failed to sell even 300 thousand copies .
With that, the situation of the creator of MindsEye seems to be more serious than initially reported. While it confirmed that parts of its teams could be laid off , the future of all its employees seems to be at risk. The same is true of PlayFusion, the developer acquired by Build a Rocket Boy in 2024.
From the moment the game was released, the company has been committed to supporting it in the long term and improving its core experience. However, the current situation suggests that this may not happen , as there is a possibility that there will be no one left to work on updates.
MindsEye is reportedly being boycotted even before its debut
Leslie Benzies’ claim that MindsEye was being stalked in some way began before the game’s debut. During the limited previews the experience received, many of the issues pointed out in the final version — such as bugs, technical issues, and the offering of a barely alive open world — had already been pointed out, but dismissed as “stalking . “
At the time, co-CEO Mark Gerhard claimed that many outlets were being paid to criticize the game, but provided no evidence of this. There were also suggestions that Rockstar Games, where Benzies had worked in the past, could be contributing to the alleged “smear campaign.”
So far, however, these allegations have not been substantiated, nor do they explain the public’s negative reaction to the game . On Steam, the game only has a 37% approval rating and has been reaching peaks of 42 daily players in recent weeks. On Metacritic, the average user rating is 2.5 points , well below the average of 38 found among professional reviews.
Thus, Build a Rocket Boy will have to present some pretty substantial evidence if it wants to convince the public that it is not entirely responsible for MindsEye’s failure. In the meantime, it needs to race against time to continue to be able to carry out its activities.
