Keita Takahashi is known for creating eccentric and unusual games, such as the series Katamari damsy and the recent To a T. For him, this creative freedom is precisely something that has been lacking in the game industry.

In a recent conversation with Fumito Ueda, creator of Shadow of the ColossusTakahashi commented that many developers end up limiting themselves too much to market standards. He believes that his different approach is, in part, that he doesn’t play so many games – which helps him to escape established formulas.

ā€œThey once asked me,ā€œ How can you play games like that? ā€ I said, “Probably because I don’t play many games,” and the person said, “Exactly.” Video games are still a young way, without a fixed definition; we could be much freer.

I don’t think I’m doing something ā€œnewā€, I just realize that people are limited – by gender, by production standards, by the idea that ā€œgames must be X.ā€ I may be being ignorant and letting go, but I want younger creators to see, “Look, a game can be like that.”
