It was recently revealed that Kraftton decided to remove the three founders of Unknown Worlds and named a new CEO to lead the development of Subnautica 2. The decision was sudden and even took the founders themselves by surprise.
In a Reddit post, Charlie “Flayra” Cleveland – one of the studio’s founders – left a message to fans. In the text, he shares his trajectory in game development, which began over 25 years ago, with the release of his first title in 1996 and the founding of Unknown Worlds in 2001.
Talking about Subnautica 2Charlie states that the game was ready to be released in early access, which makes Krafton’s decision even more shocking and frustrating for the team. He also comments that he can no longer work at the company he founded is a painful experience.
“The team put your heart in the game, and this dedication is visible. So you can understand why this week’s events were a big shock for me, Max, Ted, the entire Unknown Worlds and our community team. We know that the game is ready for early access, and we know that you are ready to play it. And although we thought that decision would be up to us, at least it is in the hands of Kraft. And after all these years, I find that I can no longer work at the company I have fought hurts.
I want you to know that what happens to the founders, the team and the game, our priority has always been – and remains – to make the best game possible for the best community in the world. With your Pulce Plush dolls, your hand-drawn fish fanarts, but with your sweaty money you have supported us in every way, in all seasons, since the time of the Half-Life Mods. And I want you to know too: this is not the last page of this story. ”
Sought to comment on the departure of the founders, Krafton declined to comment. However, the company said it was doing everything to deliver the best possible version of Subnautica 2 and which made adjustments to the schedule to prepare a “Launch in early access with a more clearly defined view”.
Unknown Worlds was acquired by Kraftton in October 2021. Last week Krafton announced that co -founders Ted Gill, Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire left their positions immediately, being replaced by Steve Papoursis, the former Striking Distance Studios CEO, the studio responsible for The Callisto Protocol.
