You may have heard of Hideki Kamiya or has been blocked by him on Twitter/X. Well, he is a veteran who for many years, worked at Capcom and created a very popular IP: Devil May Cry.
Through a new video on his channel, Hideki Kamiya discussed several topics, including his experience with Hideaki Itsuno, who left Capcom after 30 years of service.
Hideki Kamiya recalls that Hideaki Itsuno faced challenges with Devil May Cry 2, which was not well received. However, Kamiya admits to being impressed with Devil May Cry 3, considering him one of the best action games, which motivated him to create something competitive.
In his YouTube video, Hideki Kamiya publicly admitted that without Devil May Cry 3 and 4, directed by Hideaki Itsuno, Bayonetta would not be as we know today, highlighting the direct influence of the franchise.
“When DMC3 started, he called me to talk and said,“ I want to do this kind of DMC3. ” I played some ideas: “What if you do so?” “Or roasted?” Since I was not the director, I could speak at ease. And then he said something I never forgot: “Only Kamiya can do these things. If we do, the fans fall killing. ”
I could see that he was afraid, after the bad reception of DMC2. I think the beginning of DMC3 was very difficult, full of pressure. But the result shows that the team had fun creating the game. At the time, I was working at Okami. I remember Mikami went to visit the DMC3 team before me. He came back and said, “Kamiya, you have to see that. It’s amazing!”
“I went there to take a look … and thought,” Heck, that’s animal. ” It made me super excited. When we started doing Bayonetta, right after Okami, I was like: “I won’t miss it, not even the stick!” And by the time we were doing Bayonetta, the itsuno was already in DMC4.
“There in the Platinum building, they were doing DMC4 demo there. A colleague said,“ Kamiya-san, there’s DMC4 Demo there! ” We went there, played… and thought, “Man, that’s ok here…” The whole team was motivated: “We can’t lose to them!”
“That is … if Itsuno had not done DMC3 and DMC4, Bayonetta would not exist as we know. Even if it existed, it would not have the same spirit. The world he created, the tone, the energy, hit me. It made me want to overcome that.”
Bayonetta and Devil May Cry share many similarities, with many considering the protagonists, Dante and Bayonetta, as reflections from each other.
