With the arrival of the new generation of consoles, games now cost a standard price of R$350 (or US$70) — although it is far from ideal, it seems that things will get even worse for gamers’ pockets. According to estimates from one of the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, when GTA 6 is released it may cost more than any other AAA in the industry.

The price of the sequel has certainly been the subject of heated debate on social media — and it doesn’t seem like it’s just the community that’s excited about it. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian Studios, said that Rockstar could set a new trend in the industry with the pricing of GTA 6.

The issue came to light on social media after Douse criticized the way Ubisoft priced Star Wars Outlaws and its numerous editions. “I don’t like the artificiality of the aftermarket pricing structures. Use the inflated base price to sell another subscription, and use vague promises of content to inflate the ultimate editions to make the base price seem better. It all feels a bit dangerous and disconnected from the community.”

Prices should be based on “quality, breadth and depth”, says Douse

Douse continues his questioning on social media, stating that games should be priced based on what they offer in terms of “quality, breadth and depth.” He also mentions that he is not against higher prices, but that this should be measured more fairly.

When speaking specifically about GTA 6the developer said that “all games should cost more at a base level because the cost of production is outpacing pricing trends.”

However, he doesn’t believe that big companies got there by offering shallow content and promises of DLC, but rather with “quality and communication”. “Everyone is just waiting for GTA 6 do this”, he concluded his thread on the social network with a laugh.

Will the price of GTA 6 really be more expensive than R$350?

Well, so far it’s not really clear how Take-Two, the publisher that owns Rockstar, will approach pricing. GTA 6. However, the company’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, briefly spoke about this possibility in a recent interview.

“We are focused on delivering more value than we charge. Whenever we set a price, we want to make sure it is good news for the consumer and that the experience far exceeds what is expected in the context of the cost. That is the goal,” explained the executive.
