It’s been a difficult time for the gaming industry, which has faced a wave of layoffs in recent months. Media as we know it has also been suffering more and more, as digital formats have taken the lead and left traditional media outlets, such as magazines and TV shows, increasingly out of date. One of the major periodicals that has struggled to this day is the magazine Game Informerwhich closed its activities this Friday (02).

A Game Informer was one of the largest gaming magazines in the world and the oldest in the United States. It began publication in 1991 and has been one of the remaining periodicals that has struggled to stay in the market to this day.

News of Game Informer’s closure was sudden

As reported by My Citythe magazine’s team, which is also responsible for the website, weekly podcast and video documentaries about the studios, was called to a meeting this Friday (02) with the company’s vice president of HR — who is also responsible for GameStop, one of the most traditional physical stores in the USA.

At the meeting, the staff were informed that the magazine would close immediately, with everyone being laid off and given severance pay. The sudden closure of the Game Informer means that issue number 367, the cover story of Dragon Age: The Veilguardwill be the last.

“After 33 exciting years of bringing you the latest news, analysis and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer“, the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming we’ve cultivated together will live on. Thank you for being a part of our epic journey, and may your gaming adventures never end,” the statement concluded on social media.

Employees were not happy on social media

A Game Informer was purchased by GameStop along with its former owner, video game retailer FuncoLand, in 2000. This essentially gave the periodical its own newsstand in thousands of stores across the US, with customers receiving an annual subscription as one of the perks for signing up for the store’s rewards program.

On social media, the magazine’s content director Game InformerKyle Hilliard, didn’t seem too pleased with the decision. “A frustrating turn of events (especially considering we already had about 70% of the next issue done and it was going to have a GREAT cover).”

“I’m furious about the end da Game Informer“, asked the former video producer of Game InformerBen Hanson, on social media. “It’s been an incredible 33 year run and then GameStop releases this fake/empty farewell message. I bet it was written by an AI. F*** GameStop and a big f*** to Ryan Cohen.”
