The third game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will continue to use Unreal Engine 4, director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed. The team chose not to switch to Unreal Engine 5 because they already know UE4 well and adapted it to the style of the series, which avoids complications and delays in the game’s production.

The team spent several years working with Unreal Engine 4, adapting and customizing it to fit the specific needs of this series. So moving to UE5 now would require learning to use a new engine and recreating many things or, at least, reconfiguring everything. They concluded that this could delay production or complicate the process without major immediate benefits.

Unreal Engine 4 is currently seen as an older technology compared to UE5, but Hamaguchi says that working with something they already know well and has already been tuned to the style and demands of FF7 Remake is more advantageous, especially if the goal is to deliver the game smoothly.

Hamaguchi also confirmed that the official title of the last chapter has already been chosen by creative director Tetsuya Nomura, the name of the game has been chosen, but has not yet been officially released to the public.
