Unlike Dying Light 2, which offered the player choices, Dying Light: The Beast will have a linear narrative, with no choice at the end of the mission.
During a recent interview, Tymon Smektała, director of the franchise, believes that linearity allows greater control over the franchise’s canonical narrative, avoiding conflicts with players choices.
Tymon Smektała mentions the “Gears 5” dilemma, where players’ choices in a game can be disregarded in a sequence that canonize only one ending, frustrating part of the players.
“I think the linear narrative also allows us to be a little more participative and more canonically define the future of the franchise,” he explained. “When you give the players choose, in fact, to be fair, you should not say what is canon and what is not.”
“You should not impose your canon on players if you are giving them choice […] If you tell the players ‘look, this is a game with choices’, you need to accept the fact that for each of these players the canon will be different. ”
“I think from now on, we would like to follow something a little more canonical,” continued Smektała. “We would like to have a little more total control over what we do with every new Dying Light game, especially because we have a lot of plans for the future. So we want to be sure that the story goes where we want it to go.”
In short, the linear approach in Dying Light: The Beast is a strategy to keep the story under control, aligning it with the future plans of the franchise.
Dying Light: The Beast will be officially released on September 19. The game will be available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S | X at launch, with versions for PS4 and Xbox One being planned for the future.
