The Olympics are a big moment for the host country of the sporting event, which attracts all types of tourists from all over the world — including gamers. Want proof of this? Did you know that a Brazilian went around Paris taking photos of various landmarks in the French capital using only the camera on a Game Boy?
That’s right, Brazilian Paulo “Retro Boy” Santos, who also has an incredible job customizing Nintendo handhelds, traveled to Paris shortly before the Olympics to photograph countless historical monuments in the city through the lens of a Game Boy Camera.
The work brought a lot of authenticity and fewer pixels to iconic places in the French capital, such as the Eiffel Tower, Hôtel de Villem, Musée D’Orsay and many others. In fact, the simplicity of the project is what made these photos even more exceptional. Check out some of them below:
City Hall – Paris
In 2022, the city was already preparing to host the Olympics. In front of this building, which is the Paris City Hall, the Olympic arches were already standing.
These photos on the right are also mine! If you zoom in you can see the arches pic.twitter.com/1YfyuTWtct

Holy Chapel – Paris
So much so that I ended up with two photos from my meager camera roll. The previous photo was of the altar, this one is of the stained glass window on the opposite side, above the entrance.

Louvre Museum – Paris
The Victory of Samothrace is located at the top of a staircase at the end of a hallway. It is very impressive to get close to it because it is a very large and beautiful sculpture. pic.twitter.com/xNUlRra7Yd

Louvre Museum – Paris
One day is not enough to visit the Louvre, so much so that we left at night (try to go on a day when it is open later)
And on the way out I was still able to take a photo of the external pyramid, which I knew would look better at night to contrast with the dark sky. pic.twitter.com/i81qSIs2kr

Notre Dame – Paris
And to close the photos in France, there is Quasimodo’s house. The construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris already seemed well advanced and promised to be ready for the Olympics, which did not happen. A bit of a World Cup construction vibe. pic.twitter.com/P6pm8zVC5O

What is a Game Boy Camera?
The Game Boy Camera is an accessory released by Nintendo in 1998 for the iconic Game Boy. Despite its extremely limited resolution of 128 x 112 pixels, the device allows you to capture and edit black and white photos directly from the handheld — in addition to offering several fun features, including filters, frames and mini-games.

In addition to taking photos, the Game Boy Camera also allows users to create small animated GIFs and even print their photos using the Game Boy Printer accessory. The device has certainly become a must-have among retro gaming fans and collectors, as it stands out for its creativity and innovation in an era when smartphones were unheard of.
The Game Boy Camera not only expanded the capabilities of Nintendo’s handheld, but also offered a digital interaction experience to users — resulting in incredible work to this day, such as Paulo’s at the Paris Olympics.
