Japanese model making company FineMolds has launched an incredible plastic assembly kit inspired by the excellent animated film Porco Rosso: The Last Romantic Hero.
The film was directed by Hayao Miyazaki in 1992 and tells the story of Marco Pagot, a former Italian flying ace mysteriously transformed into an anthropomorphic pig, who lives as a bounty hunter shooting down air pirates in the skies of the Adriatic Sea in the 1930s. His quiet life changes when he faces pirates, an American rival and the rise of fascism.
The Porco In His Hideout – Porco Rosso Plastic Model Kit was inspired by the opening scene in which Porco Rosso receives a phone call, lying on a blue and white striped lounge chair in his hideout in Croatia, informing him of the appearance of the air pirates. The pilot is dressed in his beige jumpsuit, flight helmet and glasses on his head.

The Porco In His Hideout – Porco Rosso Plastic Model Kit also includes a base imitating sand from the secret beach with a black umbrella, a wooden table with an old radio, a green bottle and a small glass, as well as a blue and white striped tablecloth, a bucket of water and an open magazine.
The kit, in 1:48 scale, was hand-sculpted by Masahiko Kagawa and the assembly model was digitally molded by Kayodo. The kit is made of molded plastic, in four colors that match the image in the film, comes disassembled and includes decals for the aviator glasses, sunglasses, nose, beard, stripes on the chair, magazines, bottle labels and other details.
The Porco In His Hideout – Porco Rosso Plastic Model Kit costs €49.90 at Maison Ghibli Store, JPY3,420 at Hobby Search or US$41.84 at Amazon.com.
