Mafia: The Old Country uses Unreal Engine 5 to show the beauty of Sicily

Mafia: The Old Country is each day closer to its official release. Following steps from many games released in recent years, The Old Country has been developed at Unreal Engine 5.

Developer Hangar 13 abandoned the owner engine used in Mafia 3 and adopted Unreal Engine 5 for Mafia: The Old Country to focus on game development instead of creating and maintaining their own engine.

Unreal Engine 5 offers ready -made tools, such as Metahuman, which help to create cutting -edge visuals and portray the beauty of Sicily, the game scenario, and improve the quality of kinematics and facial expressions.

“Well, Unreal 5, as many players should already know, brings a plethora of resources to new games, mainly offering state -of -the -art visuals. And for the kind of game we wanted to do this time, we really wanted to emphasize the beauty of Sicily, its fantastic landscapes, besides metahuman technology and all these tools that allowed us to achieve a very high quality cinematic presentation.

“The actors’ performances are really fantastic. Facial quality is amazing, and this is critical to this mafia, just as it was for all previous games of the series at the time they were released. To reach this, say, ‘state of the visual art’, especially in the art of scenario and kinematics, was something that was in the foreground when we decided to make this transition.”

Hangar 13 notes that using its own motorcycle would only make the studio spend time trying to create tools, while with Unreal Engine 5 all this already exists, and is ready to be used.

“As things get more and more advanced, it ends up taking more and more time. And I think as a studio, we really wanted to focus on gameplay, the visuals, the narrative, the cinematic scenes, and to be able to put all our attention on it, instead of spending time by creating the graphic engine itself. It really helps us and, in the end, I believe it allows us to develop and deliver a superior game.”

The team started recreating Mafia 2 Market Square at Unreal Engine 5, taking advantage of familiarity with the place, which is also set in Sicily, to align the creative and narrative vision.

Mafia: The Old Country arrives for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S | X on August 8th.
