Although Microsoft’s focus has always been the universe of games, its PC stores and Xbox also traded content from other media, such as movies and series. However, the company is officially moving away from this business model.

From today (18), it is no longer possible to buy movies and series through Microsoft Store. Users who had already purchased content previously, however, will continue to have access to their library normally, with reproduction and download at the maximum resolution available.

“Microsoft has stopped selling new movie and TV content. Existing customers can still access content that has previously bought on Windows and Xbox devices. Users can also continue watching personal videos on Xbox devices. Windows customers continue to have access to playback and download feature.”

According to the company, the decision reflects the current scenario, where streaming services are widely available on different platforms – including Xbox itself. “Xbox and Microsoft Store on Windows offer other entertainment services that provide the latest domestic market releases. The following transaction services are currently available: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home, among others,” the company said.

The sale of movies and series by Microsoft began in 2006, with the release of Zune Video Marketplace. The service later evolved to Xbox Video and, in 2015, was officially integrated with Microsoft Store on the PC and consoles. Now this endeavor comes to an end.
