In recent years, a factor that has always been important to a portion of players in a game is its graphics, because the more beautiful visually it, the more it draws attention.
However, Shadow of the Colossus developers/creators think differently, claiming that games of games are no longer so important in the current game industry.
As an example, Keita Takahashi mentioned the roblox game/platform, which stands out as one of the most popular titles in today’s industry, sporting millions of players and being a simple game graphically.
Fumito Ueda: “We have gone from the time when moving each grass sheet in real time was a differential of sale. Today this is the basics; the effort needs to be to surprise people in other aspects.”
Keita Takahashi: “Seeing the kids playing Roblox proves that the grass doesn’t even have to swing. Even the animation may just be good enough. It’s strange, but that’s the age we live in.”
Fumito Ueda: “Our generation of games was like a technology fair: larger sprites, 3D graphics. Today the middle is mature; what matters is the content, presentation, history, emotion. It is better to invest features in what will really impress the audience. Even your mobile camera made me think: ‘It really cares.’ (laughter)”
In this case, before (90s and 2000s), the focus was great on showing technology: better graphics, more polygons, real -time effects, swinging grass, etc. It was almost like a technology fair, what caught the public’s attention was to see something no one had seen before in technical terms.
While currently these graphic advances have become the pattern. Only having gram shaking or beautiful graphics no longer impresses. What really catches the eye now is content.
