Open world games continue to sell well, but many players already show signs of saturation, tired of seeing the same formula repeated in virtually every title of the genre. Ghost of Tsushima was widely praised in its release, but did not escape criticism related to its open world style.
For the sequence, Ghost of Yōtei, the development team wants to evolve in this regard – and one of the main changes is the greatest focus on organic exploration. According to co-director Nate Fox, the new game intends to offer less explicit direction, allowing the player’s curiosity to say the rhythm of the journey.
“The thing that Jason and I [Connell, co-diretor] More love is that moment when you are on horseback, looking at a vast and beautiful landscape. And maybe the wind is telling you: if you want to continue the story, go there. But then you see something in the corner of the eye that arouses your curiosity. And thinks, ‘Do you know something? I’ll take a look at it. ‘ This moment when the game is not really telling you where to go or what to do. It is you who decide. This is the most beautiful in open world games. ”
We have this accessible game, inspired by Samurai cinema, and the challenge for us as developers is to create something that offers this extra level of creative freedom for which we seek. Allow players to enjoy the game, and at the same time never abandon the structure of the story. ”
In the story, the players will accompany the protagonist on his mission to hunt the six of Yōtei. The order of the battles can be freely defined, but the creators ensure that there will still be a clear narrative structure.
“It’s very difficult to have a story without structure. You will end up having a beginning, middle and end, so although ATU’s journey is hunting the six of Yōtei, we will not let you go around killing the six without a narrative structure. We value the story a lot.”
Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, 2025 for PS5. Take the opportunity to purchase your copy at Amazon with a lower price than on PSN.
