After presenting a new gameplay in the latest State of Play, Ghost of Yōtei has received common criticism of many sequences of recent years: that it would be “more of the same” without significant changes in relation to predecessor.
The creative directors of the game, Jason Connell and Nate Fox, recently commented on the development philosophy adopted by Sucker Punch. Commenting on the criticism, Connell stated that the original artistic style was something they loved and did not want to change.
“Some people may say,” Ah, it seems like the same as the previous one. ” And I answer, “Yes, we love the artistic style of the previous one. I think he’s essential. ” So what we said was, “Ok, how can we expand this?” Now we have much longer lines of view.
The team followed the concept of creating something “new but familiar” – an approach that seeks to preserve the identity of Ghost of Tsushima, while introducing relevant innovations. Connel claim that they could bet on a more photorealism look, for example, but they didn’t want to lose the essence of the franchise.
“This may sound silly, but it actually helps a lot and really works: we use this term,” new, but familiar. “There are versions of this game that could have been extremely familiar, and others that could be extremely new to the point of losing Ghost’s identity. But again, part of it is to decide what we will keep. For example, the artistic style – we could have followed a way as” let’s go to the next. ” But the artistic style is part of Ghost’s identity, so why would we get away from it?
Even with this feeling of familiarity, the directors guarantee that Ghost of Yōtei It brings several news, such as the protagonist’s memories, new forms of animal interaction and more. “The central point is this: maintaining what is familiar, but adding important news”reinforced Connell.
Fox, in turn, highlighted changes in the combat system as a good example of this balance. The main change is to replace the four original game postures of five distinct weapons styles, each with its own uses and dynamics.
“I want to talk about combat. I think it’s a great example of this“ fresh but familiar ”strategy that Jason mentioned. In Tsushima, we had that feeling of lethal precision inspired by the classic samurai movies – and we loved it. So we didn’t want to change it, but of course we wanted to bring something new. We have increased this number. Now there are five postures-but they are not just postures in the way of holding the weapon.
Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, 2025 for PS5. Take the opportunity to purchase your copy on Amazon with a lower price than on PSN
