Valve maintains a list of guidelines that prohibits the publication of certain types of content on Steam, such as games that promote hate speech or display explicit images of real people. Now the company has just added a new rule that has generated discussions on social networks.

The update includes the prohibition of content that may conflict with the policies of companies responsible for processing payments – such as Visa, Mastercard – or with internet providers. Although the rule does not mention specific examples, the focus is directed to adult content.

“What you should not publish on Steam:
Content that may violate the rules and rules established by Steam’s payment processors, card and bank networks, or internet providers. In particular, certain types of adult content. ”

For now, the measure seems to have mainly affected games with more controversial themes, such as incest, with several games on the subject having been removed from Steam today. Still, many users show concern about the impacts of this decision on the future of the platform.

“I don’t care about pornographic games. But it is ridiculous that payment processors have so much power, to the point of deciding what may or may not be bought.”commented a user.

This type of restriction is not unheard of. In 2017, Patreon also had to review its content guidelines after pressure from companies such as Mastercard and Visa, who refused to mediate transactions involving certain types of adult material.
