Knowing Superman goes beyond reading comics or watching movies: to really dive into the experience of flying over Metropolis, fight iconic villains and feel the grandeur of almost unlimited powers, nothing better than playing titles that capture, directly or indirectly, the essence of the man of steel.
Next, a selection of games that every Superman fan should try. They offer mechanics or environments that refer to the hero: whether by the flight, the huge force or the ideal of justice.
Prototype
Prototype is suitable for those who enjoy the powerful, destructive and superhuman side of Superman. Although Alex Mercer (and James Heller, following) is an antihero with a dark footprint, the powers he displays greatly remember what Superman would be in a more brutal or uncontrollable state.
Alex Mercer has surface, super speed, colossal jump, regeneration and the ability to take on other forms, such as turning arms into blades. Cross blocks with a single jump and throw tanks as if they were toys creates a raw sensation of absolute power, very close to what Superman would represent… if they lost control.
Saints Row IV
Despite the comic and exaggerated footprint of the franchise, this is one of the games that comes closest to the experience of “being Superman” in terms of gameplay. You start the game as president of the US, but you are soon played in an alien simulation where you get superpowers absurdly similar to those of Superman.
You climb buildings in seconds, cross blocks in the blink of eyes and throw enemies like cloth dolls. And of course, there is also supersalt, super speed and even freezing enemies. In the game, you become practically a god.
Megaton Rainfall
Megaton Rainfall is one of the closest games of a Superman simulator ever made. You control an almost omnipotent being sent to Earth to protect humanity from an alien invasion. The game is first person, and you have free flight at absurd speeds, ability to destroy enemies with a finger snap, and also the constant risk of causing more destruction than the villains themselves wrong.
It is the game that comes closest to the physical and emotional sensation of being Superman in the middle of the flight, facing colossal threats and trying to save civilians at the same time. In addition, the game forces you to have responsibility for the use of power.
Infamous: Second Son
Although Delsin Rowe does not exactly have the same powers, he represents a modern version of a conflict superhero, with increasingly destructive and urban powers. Throughout the game, you unlock smoke powers, neon and more, which include very high speed movement, air strike, fluid climbing and energy explosions.
The game is in an open world, with freedom to explore Seattle and combat oppressors with superhuman powers. In addition, the game explores the weight of choices, a very common theme in good stories from Superman. Second Son can be seen as a modern reinterpretation and punk of Superman’s idea.
Crackdown 3
Crackdown 3 delivers superpowers costume such as surface, huge jumps and explosive combat that many Superman fans will recognize and appreciate, even without the same level of moral or narrative depth. You control an overwhelming in a futuristic city dominated by an evil corporation.
Over time, you collect orbes that increase your powers, allowing absurd jumps, supersonic races, superhuman strength, massive explosions and devastating air strikes. Gameplay is in an open world, full of exaggerated action and large -scale destruction.
Sunset Overdrive
In a chaotic city infested by mutants, you play as a highly customizable protagonist who slides cables, runs through the walls, makes insane jumps and uses absurd weapons. The highlight of the game is acrobatic and stylized mobility, which makes you cross the city without touching the floor for several minutes.
The speed and fluidity of motion are such that you feel almost flying. You dominate the city from above, defeat enemies with creativity and move easily. The feeling that the world is its playground very much resembles the way Superman is portrayed in Metrópolis, but without the mutants.
Undefeated
It is a small, free project, but that puts you directly on the skin of a superhero that flies, fights and saves civilians like Man of Steel itself. Developed by a small team, Undefeated is a superman (non-official) game prototype in the third person.
You play with a character who fly freely for a city, faces enemies with superpowered blows and can perform rescue, combat and urban defense missions. You have a view of warmth, surfaces, super speed, impact attacks, and the game rewards you for saving civilians and protecting buildings from destruction.
