It’s no secret that the Switch is one of the biggest hits in Nintendo’s catalog. The Japanese giant’s hybrid console was released on March 3, 2017, and to this day, almost 2,700 days later, it has yet to be replaced by any other device from the company — officially surpassing Nintendo’s (NES) record of 2,686 days.
As observed in the survey of VGC, The Nintendo Switch is completing 2,688 days on the market this Friday (12). Assuming the console’s successor isn’t released before March 1, 2025, the device could go more than 2,920 days without being replaced by newer hardware.
The outlet also suggests that since the NES’ debut, the gap between generations has become progressively shorter. However, the Nintendo Wii, which launched in 2006, was the last console before the Switch that lasted that long: 2,191 days until the Wii U arrived in November 2012.

And speaking of the Wii U, this was the Japanese giant’s console that lasted the shortest time on the market — just 1,566 days. The reason could certainly be related to the device’s commercial failure.

When will the Nintendo Switch successor be released?
We’re already halfway through the current console generation — and Sony itself has already talked about the “last half of the PS5 life cycle” in its most recent fiscal reports. It’s worth remembering that the timing is different for Nintendo, which potentially may be planning to release the Switch’s successor next year.
According to information from Nikkeia respectable Japanese outlet, Nintendo has reportedly postponed the “Switch 2” until next year in an attempt to avoid potential issues with the device’s stocks, aiming to meet all demand.
Additionally, the company is also reportedly working on ways to deal with scalpers who intend to resell the next-gen console. If you want to know more, check out the details in the link below!
