Launched in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 is about to complete four years on the market — but that doesn’t mean that all PlayStation players in general have a new generation console.
Last Tuesday (14), Sony revealed that the PlayStation 5 has sold 59.3 million units since its debut. This means that the new generation console is practically in line with the PS4 during the same period of life — which also had 60 million units sold. Furthermore, the Japanese giant confirmed that the PlayStation ecosystem has 118 million monthly active users.
However, as noted by journalist Stephen Totilo, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the relationship between the almost 60 million PS5 sold and the 118 million monthly active users in the PlayStation ecosystem suggests that half of the platform’s players still play on PS4.

“Earlier this week, Sony made headlines with the PS5, reaching 59 million units sold. Good number,” said the journalist on the social network. “Sony says the PS5 is in the second half of its lifecycle and that PlayStation has 118 million monthly active users. So half are still on PS4. HALF of PlayStation players are not current-gen.”
PS5 sales fell compared to the previous year
During last week’s fiscal report, Sony also revealed that PlayStation 5 sales numbers were down 29% from the previous year. In total, a total of 20.8 million units were sold in fiscal year 2023 — the period covering April 2023 and March 2024.

The number is slightly below the Japanese giant’s estimates, which intended to sell 21 million units. Now, the forecast for the current fiscal year 2024, which ends in March 2025, is to sell 18 million devices.
