The political climate in the US after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 elections has led several companies, including those of the world of video games, to rethink diversity, equity and inclusion policies, Dei. Actress Samantha Béart, who gives voice to Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, states that there is already evidence of censorship to narratives queer in some games.

In an interview with The Gamer that will be released soon, Béart reveals: “I know they are cutting stories. Historically, complacency does not work well.” No entanto, acredita que este fenómeno é temporário: “Há indies, comunidades que escrevem e se juntam, vamos ultrapassar isto juntos”.

The warning is done at a time when movements such as Gamergate 2.0 have returned, with LGBTQ+ and racial themes to be labeled by some as factors that harm industry sales. Baldur’s Gate 3 proved, in part, the opposite: he sold 15 million copies until November 2024, which makes him a successful example, an AAA game with diverse content, although it can also be simply because it is a good game.

Similarly, several publishers seem to be taking a similar course: Take-Two Interactive, GTA editor, eliminated references to Dei in its 2025 annual report, replacing them with something more vague, more peaceful mindset: “diversity of thought”. CI Games wrote “Rip Dei” in a post by his CEO, assuming a strong position against diversity policies in recruitment.

Despite the cuts in accessibility policies and I gave some major studios, there are cases where inclusion is still present. Independent studios, with less editorial pressure, maintain some creative freedom. Baldur’s Gate 3, for example, received the Industry Diversity Award prize in the Gayming Awards 2025.
