Games are not just about fun and challenges, as they can also touch us deeply, making us laugh, reflect, but until crying. If you are looking for experiences that mess with your feelings, here is a selection of games that are known for your ability to evoke intense emotions, especially those that can bring tears to the eye.
These games not only entertain, but also make us feel alive, reminding us of the depth of the emotions that interactivity can bring. So prepare the handkerchiefs and immerse yourself in these experiences that promise guaranteed emotion.
Life is Strange
Max and Chloe’s relationship is the heart of history. When Max comes back in time to try to save Chloe, we get stuck with that tension: how far is it worth the timeline by someone we love? Each decision carries irreversible consequences and this sense of responsibility makes any player suffocate a cry when he sees the impact of his own hands.
The final sacrifice scene (and there are two versions) is so powerful that no matter how many times you’ve played: the outcome always thrills, the soundtrack intensifies even more. If you are looking for a title that guarantees tears, Life is Strange does not disappoint.
Red Dead Redemption 2
The protagonist goes from an out-of-law to someone capable of questioning his morale. Following his transformation, facing tuberculosis, betrayals and the ghosts of the past, leaves any player with a tight heart. Arthur’s final sacrifice, combined with the soundtrack, is to leave the heart.
Arthur’s friendship with John Marston is moving, especially in the final stretch. The bond with Sadie Adler gives emotional weight. One of the most striking scenes is when Arthur returns to camp, knowing that his time is ending.
The Walking Dead (Telltale)
You take on the role of Lee, who protects the young Clementine in a zombie apocalypse. The moral choices and the paternal relationship between the two are the heart of the narrative. The end of the first season is one of the most iconic and sad moments of games.
Lee Everett ends up being bitten by a zombie in previous episodes and is dying slowly. His final mission is to save and protect Clementine, the little girl he took care of throughout the story. The player must choose to ask Clementine to shoot him (so that he does not turn zombie) or tell her to leave and let him turn.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
You simultaneously control the two brothers, the eldest and younger, using each analog. This mechanics creates an immediate bond: you feel the weight of coordinating two hearts in one journey. You are seeking healing for the sick father, solving puzzles that strengthen the bond between them.
Set in a fantasy world, the story becomes tragic, with a painful sacrifice that leaves a deep emotional mark in the player. The narrative about family and loss culminates in a devastating moment that uses gameplay to convey emotion.
Final Fantasy X
As an invoke, Yuna needs to go through the world by performing the “Sending” of the spirits to defeat Sin. Each invocation is beautiful, but it brings the weight of the death of a beloved being and reinforces the sense of duty it carries. In the end, Tidus, Yuna and the group defeat Sin, who was Jecht, Tidus’s father.
Then they beat Yu Yevon, breaking Sin’s Renaissance Cycle and releasing Spira. But Tidus discovers that it is just a Fayth dream creation, and at the end of the battle he needs to disappear, as Fayth can finally rest.
Heavy Rain
An interactive thriller where their choices determine the fate of various characters. Emotional tension and possible tragic finals, such as the loss of a child, are intense. Each of the four protagonists (Ethan, Madison, Norman and Scott) is somehow linked to the mystery of the origami killer.
The game puts you in the face of distressing decisions: to obey the cruel orders of the serial killer, run over time or risk your own life to save. Seeing Ethan wounded, exhausted, and yet persists for the sake of the Son generates a mixture of fear and hope.
